Switched Long Distance
Switched Long Distance calls are calls connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) via a Prescribed Inter-exchange Carrier (PIC) allocated to the outgoing telephone line. The main advantage of Switched Long Distance call is that it does not require any additional equipment on a customer’s premises.
Switched Long Distance plans work for both residential and business lines, and unlike phone cards do not require inputting an access number or PIN code prior to making a call. There are several types of calls:
Local Call
A Local Call is any call using a sole switching resource that does not transmit to another telephone network. It is a phone call made in a local calling area identified by the local exchange carrier.
Regional Toll/IntraLATA Call
Regional Toll Call, also known as IntraLATA call, requires users to dial “1” and an area code prior to dialling the seven digit number of the call destination. It is considered a regional toll call if the call is made through a location beyond the local calling area but within the same LATA. To verify your specific Regional Toll Provider, simply dial “1” your area code, 700-4141.
Intrastate Call
Intrastate Calls are calls conducted between two different LATAs but take place within the same state. This type of service can only be provided by long distance phone companies. Dial 1-700-555-4141 to determine your existing Intrastate Long Distance Provider.
Interstate Call
Interstate long distance calls are calls connected and placed to another state. You may find out who your current Interstate Long Distance Provider is by calling 1-700-555-4141.
International Call
Any toll call that is placed to a location outside of the United States is considered an international call. This type of call is the most expensive because it goes beyond the boundaries of the country and requires a long distance service provider. Your existing International Long Distance Provider can be verified by calling 1-700-555-4141.
